Highway Clean-Up
Once a semester, we drive out on highway 103 and pick up trash along our 1 mile stretch. This is a great way for us to hang-out while also giving back to our community by making it a cleaner place. At the end we always take a big group picture at our Chi Delta sign. It's like a reward!
Crete's Great Pumpkin Festival
In the fall, we attend "Crete's Great Pumpkin Festival" to volunteer. This is a family-friendly fall festival located in Downtown Crete. We assist in setting up, running games, and more! It's always a great way for us to get involved with the Crete community!
No Means November
As part of our philanthropy, we use November to hold many different events to spread awareness on sexual assault. Some of those events have included:
-
"Open Mic Night", an event for survivors and advocates to share their stories, spreading awareness that even our campus is affected.
-
"Support the Silenced", a 24 hour event on the stage in Lakeside where participants are completely silent to show their support for survivors who were silenced.
-
"Trivia Night", where participants can share their knowledge and compete for a prize, learning important facts and statistics in the process.
We also fundraise for Hope Crisis Center by selling "consent cookies" and "consent shirts" throughout the month.
Sexual Assault Awareness Month
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM). More recently we have been trying to implement more events and projects into this month. We participate in Denim Day and Host Step$4Them already, but this past year we have made teal ribbons to hand out, showing that even though SAAM may be ending, the support and awareness should be year-round. We have also made an appearance at the first ever 'Survivors Speak", hosted by CAPE and Phi Sigma Tau sorority to show our support for this important cause. This upcoming year we hope to add even more events to fill this month with the awareness it needs!
Relay for Life
A long-standing Doane tradition is a night called "Relay for Life". During this event, different Greek groups, clubs, and student organizations gather together. We all set up tables selling things such as food, games, and items to raise money for cancer research. While these tables are running, the groups have at least one representative that hold their group's baton and walk laps (like a relay!) and throughout the night there are games to participate in. At the end of the night, the money is totaled and announced to the relay attendees! This past Relay we sold quesadillas and were the highest earning of all of the sorority tables!
Step$4Them
Started by our Alum, Alexis Lipson, Step$4Them is a 5k run (or 1 mile walk) with proceeds going to Hope Crisis Center. This past year we had a record-breaking attendance with over 100 people coming to show their support, and raised over $400 in total! We also had a hang-out with Gamma Phi Iota Sorority where we made signs to put up along the trail.
